During those times, I often felt disconnected and unsure of my place within the church, which made me realize how important active involvement is for building relationships. As I became more involved, that feeling of unity gave me a sense of belonging, (I belong, you belong, we belong). Jesus served by putting others before himself. There was no boasting, or “Look what I did!” Jesus modeled for us how to be a servant to others, and how to serve with humility.

Unity becomes easier when we have the same mindset of helping. For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Devotional

Their visit reveals different responses to Jesus’s birth: The Magi worship him, King Herod seeks to kill him, and the religious leaders show indifference, highlighting that Jesus’s arrival inspired both worship and hostility from the beginning. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

Devotional

Out of the 4 gospels, only 1 speaks of Mary’s song. She is visiting her cousin Elizabeth who asks Mary in V.43, “How could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Mary’s response was a spirit of praise. Mary was not only giving God praise, but the truth is also that her song speaks of who she is and how deep her faith is. V.46-47 says, “Oh how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” Mary could have focused on the fear she felt. Instead, she focused on blessings within her turmoil. This happens today, we focus on the negatives we face when we should be giving thanks to God for allowing situations to happen.

There are 3 types of revolutionary thoughts in Mary’s words. The first is a moral revolutionary thought in V.51, “His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and the haughty ones.” Mary is speaking of the death of pride. In our day and in this society, we hold a lot of pride. We tend to turn a blind eye to those in need and refuse to ask for help when we need it. Our pride can hold us back from acting on God’s direction and being obedient.

Second is a social revolutionary thought. Mary says, “He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.” Mary knew she was nothing special to the eyes of the world. She saw her situation as God exalting the lowly. God has seen fit to use a poor girl to bring the greatest gift to mankind. Our society puts lots of importance on prestige and wealth. The more we have the better we are. God is proving that the world’s labels and prestige are not important to him. He is looking at the heart of a person, like he did with Mary.

The last is economic revolutionary thought. V.53, “He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.” If we are a Christian society, why do we have hungry people? God’s word tells us that our status at the bank will not matter when God comes again. To live obedient to God, we should not gain wealth and let our fellow man go hungry. Having wealth is not a bad thing. The issue is how we choose to use our wealth to glorify God.

Lastly, we see Mary trust in the Lord. V.54-55 “He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. For he made this promise to Abraham and his children forever.” Mary trusted God! She believed in his covenant to Abraham. She trusted that God would keep his promises. Should we not do the same? Even in hard times, we must keep the faith and trust that our God has it all under control.

Written by Janet Hutton

Secondly, it shows us that God will provide us with what we need. He brought his one and only son into our mortal world so that he would die for each and every one of our sins and so that we could have eternal life in Heaven. And lastly, it teaches us to have faith in God's plan, as Joseph was hesitant to marry Mary, especially after she had become pregnant before getting married. But after his encounter with an angel of the Lord, he believed in God and his purpose of being Jesus’ father.

Written by AJ Crawford
11th Grader

And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”

Devotional

Zechariah was on duty to serve as priest before God, chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary. Normally this would have been a quiet moment. Technically, the other priests would tie a rope around the ‘on duty’ priest just in case he needed to be pulled out if things got real.

Well, that day, things did indeed get real! What Zechariah probably assumed was going to be an uneventful, routine task turned into a conversation with no less than the angel Gabriel. You would think that a high priest seeing someone suddenly appear in the Holy of Holies would tend to believe the words that would follow, but worldly age and experience still caused Zechariah to doubt.

While Zechariah’s muteness seems at first to be merely a punishment for lack of belief, it turns into an opportunity to glorify God when he is suddenly able to speak after affirming the baby’s name is John. Rather, He gave them the choice to recognize, believe, and follow. He gave the gift of life and rebirth the world, as long as they chose him. In this Advent season, it is with this present from God that begins the season where we continually must choose to strive and reach for the light that illuminates the darkness.

The love and faithfulness given to us by God through Jesus is the best present we could ever hope for every Christmas season. In an attempt to emulate, to a very minor capacity, this gift, we give gifts to one another and light the Advent wreath to remind us. These reminders are beacons in the darkness to show us of God's light and love. These remembrances are important for my family as we progress through the season. It gives us hope and reminds us that light overcomes darkness and replaces doubt with feelings of hope and peace.

Written by Jill and Kyle Lindey
