7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

A true love for God and people is proof of one being a born-again Christian.  When a person has experienced God’s forgiveness and received the Holy spirit you don’t have a choice to forgive or show love to people.  If we expect God to forgive us and show us love, we need to do the same in Jesus’s name.

Jesus who lived a life without sin willingly died on the cross for us so we might be forgiven of our sins.  This also had to take place for us to receive the Holy Spirit.
