Luke 1:39-45

Passage

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Devotional

As I think toward the Christmas season, I think of this time not just as a time of festivity, but as an opportunity to connect with others, share joy, and recognize the miracle of God’s love.  In this passage, Mary’s visit to Elizabeth reminds us that joy comes from celebrating life through our relationships and experiences with others.  Sometimes that joy comes from unexpected circumstances.  Although different, they shared something in common.  Often that’s all it takes to open up new relationships.  Both of the miraculous pregnancies remind me of the hope, joy and faithfulness that God offers and to appreciate all blessings in life.  Just as Mary and Elizabeth rejoice in their unique journeys, I too should embrace the hope and faith that this season brings.  Their connection encourages me to want to reach out to others offering support, love, and joy where I can.  I am inspired to think about the miracles of life and the love and joy and hope that comes with new beginnings and cherished relationships, both old and new.
