 Luke 2:8-14

Passage

8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

Devotional

In these verses, an angel appears to shepherds, telling them that the Messiah has been born, and to give all glory to God.  The main thing that I got from these verses was how big a deal Jesus being born was.  It was prophesied throughout the Old Testament, and the news was so big, that a literal angel broke the news to these people.  Also in verse 14, the praise is redirected to God, showing us the true reason for all of our blessings and magic in life.  Something else cool that I noticed is in verses 9-10, the angel appeared to the shepherds, and they were terrified.  I believe that this was because these angels had so much power from God and humans are so distant from God, so the shepherds felt an overwhelming sensation that is described as fear.  They could have also been scared because they thought the angel was delivering bad news.  Either way, the angel says, “do not be afraid,” and we can apply this to our lives, knowing that we have God on our side.
