Revelation 3:20

Passage

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Devotional

The words spoken by Jesus in this verse say to me that Jesus is trying to meet us where we are at; all we have to do is let Him in?  In saying that if someone hears Him and chooses to open the door that He will then eat with that person, I think He is saying that despite His efforts to be there for us and to make Himself known to us, we have to accept His presence for us to truly be in His company and He in ours.

I also think that the mention of Jesus sitting down and eating with us is particularly powerful in this verse.  We learn in our faith that the act of sharing a meal, of breaking bread, is a symbol of shared community and understanding.  In providing the prospect of sharing a meal with us ,and further the implicit meaning that is attached to that, Jesus tells us what our role is in the matter:  to allow Him to be among us by accepting Him and the spirit of His teachings.  We have to let Him in and embrace Him to unify ourselves with Him.
